The research grant of $25,000 is for one year beginning January 1, 2000 with second and third year extensions at increased funding levels to examine whether hysterectomy, with or without ovariectomy, contributes to women's complaints of resulting deficits in sexual arousal or orgasmic response. This research project would exclude medical treatment and exclude pharmaceuticals or other medicinal agents.
Athena Institute is a biomedical research organization whose mission is to improve the quality of healthcare for women through original experimental research in previously uninvestigated physiology and behavioral endocrinology.
The awarded funds will be payable to the department at the host institution for disbursement to the selected scientific investigator as support for her/his salary or for direct research costs. Additionally, Athena Institute will pay the institution an additional ten percent (10%) above grantee's salary to contribute to institutional overhead costs.
ELIGIBILITY:
M.D., Ph.D. or D.O. degree in a full-time academic position with an accredited medical institution with an interest and some experience in female behavioral endocrinology and sexual response measurement. The work must be performed within a country whose demographic data reveal that at least 90% of its hysterectomies are performed for elective, benign conditions.
