MONTREAL | You can think of it as a love potion you mix into your perfume or cologne. A placebo-controlled study suggests daily use of a sex attractant pheromone formula increases the frequency of intercourse in men and also improves the amount of petting, kissing and affection experienced by postmenopausal women.

"Women report that when they wear it they stop being invisible," said lead study investigator Dr. Winnifred Cutler (PhD), president and founder of the Athena Institute in Chester Springs, Pa.

"Menopausal women (click for menopause research) often complain that they have become invisible to men. The sex-attractant pheromone formula is a sexual phenomenon that makes men notice them and once they start wearing the pheromone they start getting a lot more attention everywhere they go. It is increasing the amount of romantic attention a person receives."

Dr. Cutler, who presented her study findings at the meeting here, said after both the men and women started wearing the pheromone fragrances they recorded in a calendar an improvement in their sexual interest and frequency of sexual contact. For men, it made women more attracted to them and for women it made men more attracted to them. The pheromone cosmetic formulas (click for product details)are specifically designed to increase sexual attractiveness to the opposite sex.

Dr. Cutler and her colleagues did a post hoc analysis of data from two double-blind, placebo-controlled studies that were published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and investigated topical synthesized human pheromone cosmetic formulas.

All subjects wore their regular cologne or perfume daily. However, half of the subjects in the studies had a placebo added to their cologne and the other half had sex attractant pheromone added to their cologne. Both studies combined included 83 participants.

The results showed greater increases in sociosexual behaviours among pheromone users than placebo users compared with baseline values.

"Men who wore pheromones got the biggest result in frequency of sexual intercourse. Compared to those on placebo their effect size was almost threefold greater," Dr. Cutler said in an interview. "Postmenopausal women who wore pheromones had the strongest effect in more petting, kissing and affection. Their effect size was also about threefold greater in the pheromone group compared to the placebo group."

There is a special pheromone compound designed for men (Athena Pheromone 10X) and a separate one for women (Athena Pheromone 10:13). Individuals receive it in a vial and then add it to their perfume or aftershave. The extract is clear and odorless.
